Thermal Auricular Therapy (also known as Hopi Ear Candling)
This is not a new therapy. Ancient Egyptians make reference to the use of Ear Candles and parchment scrolls describing the procedure have been found in the Orient. The Hopi are the oldest Pueblo tribe, with medicinal knowledge and a high degree of spirituality and there are coloured murals on the wall in the Hopi Tower at the Grand Canyon depicting the use of ear candles.
I use only Biosun candles as they conform to the Medical Device Directive (93/42EEC). There are several different kinds of candles in use but I consider Biosun to be the safest.
Biosun Candles are made up of completely natural products:
- Pure Linen cloth, pesticide free.
- 100% Beeswax – strongly antiseptic and anti-inflammatory.
- Honey Extracts – antiseptic and anti-inflammatory.
- Sage – an anti-inflammatory, astringent herb
- St John’s Wort – also an anti-inflamatory, astringent and very calming and relaxing on the nervous system.
- Chamomile – essential oil known for its relaxation benefits.
- Beta Carotene (Vitamin A) which helps fight infection and strengthen the immune system.
You can remain fully clothed for the treatment and will be asked to lay on the couch on your side. A cloth will be placed around your ear and over your hair and my hands will hold the candle safely in place. A filter within the candle prevents any residue/powder from re-entering the ear.
Most people comment on how relaxing this treatment is – and many fall asleep during the wonderful head massage that finishes the treatment. Occasionally during the candling you may hear gentle popping and crackling noises and this is quite normal as the candle burns toward the filter line. The warmth of the candle causes an expansion within the ear and surrounding structures and allows a draining and clearing of congestion.
Ear Candling can help snoring, labyrinthitis, sinusitis, glue ear, colds and flu, tinnitus, Menieres disease, stress, neuralgia, reduced sense of smell and/or hearing, regular swimmers, frequent air travel, vertigo, tension of the neck muscles, excessive or compacted ear wax, rhinitis.
